Join us

We are always happy to welcome motivated, enthusiastic people to join our team. We are LGBTQ+ friendly and aspire to work in an inclusive way. Projects cover a range of topics, materials and techniques, so if you are interested in joining us, please contact Hamish for discussions prior to making an application.

MSci projects (UoB undergraduates)

Each year we typically offer 1–2 UoB Chemistry MSci projects to UoB undergraduate students. Please take time to read the relevant page in the project booklet, as well any references and parts of this website, which give a flavour of the research experiences we offer. Please contact Hamish by email for further information.

PhD studentships

Applications for fully funded 3.5-year PhD studentships in the School of Chemistry typically close early each calendar year, to begin October that year. Please contact Hamish well in advance to discuss potential projects and the application process. Generic emails will not be responded to.

Applicants should hold (or expect to gain) a first-class honours degree (or equivalent). Funding will typically cover tuition fees for home (UK) students and a maintenance grant in line with the UKRI rate.

Self-funded students should send a brief letter of motivation and a CV to Hamish, describing your interests and potential funding routes available, some of which may be found here. Generic emails will not be responded to.

Other open studentships will be advertised on this page.

Postdoctoral researchers

If you are interested in joining the group as a postdoctoral researcher, please send a brief letter of your motivation and a CV to Hamish, describing your interests and potential funding routes available. Generic emails will not be responded to. Open positions will be advertised on this page, and a list of potential funding routes to postdoctoral fellowships can be found here.

EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowships typically fund 3-year positions in a limited number of topics. For more details search for ‘Fellowships’ on the UKRI Funding finder.

Royal Society Newton International Fellowships typically fund 2-year positions for non-UK scientists to conduct research in the UK. Applications close around March each year. For more details see the Royal Society webpages.

Royal Society Career Development Fellowships typically support salary, research and training costs for up to four years for early career scientists from underrepresented backgrounds (currently Black or mixed Black) to establish their research careers. The 2024 round for applications closed in January. For more details see the Royal Society webpages.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions European Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to researchers of any nationality who wish to engage in R&I projects by either coming to Europe from any country in the world or moving within Europe, including the UK. Applications close around September each year. The standard duration of these fellowships must be between 12 and 24 months. For more details see the MSCA webpages.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships typically support a portion of salary and research costs over a 3-year period. For more details, see the Leverhulme Trust webpages.

Birmingham Fellowships typically support emerging independent academics to build their own groups and research programmes. All Fellowships come with a permanent post at UoB. For more details, see the University webpages.
