Postdoctoral researchers

Titas Pramanik joined the group in 2024 from the City University of Hong Kong, where he worked as a postdoc with the “Innovation and Technology Fund Research Talent” award. His main principal investigator at UoB is Dr Yueting Sun in Mechanical Engineering; he is working with the Sun and Yeung groups on the crystallography of metal-organic frameworks under water intrusion. He is a crystallographer, and his research interest is to correlate the structure-property relationship in materials for diverse applications. Titas completed his Ph.D. from the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, Indian Institute of Science, India. Outside his research work, Titas enjoys cooking, listening to music, singing, debating socio-political issues, cycling, going to pubs, and watching football matches.
PhD students

Harry Lloyd joined the group in 2019 for his MSci project, investigating structure diversity and conductivity in new molecular perovskites. He returned to do a PhD in 2020, joint-funded by Diamond Light Source, looking at time-resolved structural determination of MOF & perovskite structures, co-supervised by Dr Mark Warren and Dr Lucy Saunders at Diamond. Outside of Chemistry, he is an avid West Bromwich Albion fan, a keen book reader & an enthusiastic tea drinker.

Joe Atherton joined the group in 2020 for a PhD project looking at pre-nucleation in the crystallisation of MOFs, funded by the School of Chemistry. Previously, he completed an MChem at the University of Sheffield, including a final-year research project on organometallic complexes, and spent four years working for a supplier of analytical chemistry equipment. Aside from chemistry he enjoys walking, reading, history, and languages.

Suzie Hughes joined the group in 2021 as a PhD student, and is researching mixed-metal MOFs and hybrid perovskites for potential use as sensing devices. She completed her MChem at the University of Bath, and her final-year project was based on the adsorption and release capabilities of flexible MOFs. Outside of chemistry, Suzie enjoys playing the piano, relaxing in coffee shops, and going on walks.

Sophie Ray joined the group in 2022 for her MSci project investigating intermediate species involved in MOF formation. Her PhD, joint-funded by Diamond Light Source, and co-supervised by Andy Smith (I22) and Phil Chater (I15-1), looks at investigating heirarchical materials formation over multiple lengthscales using X-ray scattering. Outside of university, Sophie is an avid runner, keen reader and enjoys music and going to gigs.
